Me and the staff are in the metroplex for our annual staff retreat. It’s been a great experience so far! These times away are helpful for long range strategy planning and large scale collaboration. In addition to that, we have a chance to be poured into and spiritually refreshed.
We started the Right Now Leadership Conference today. From all of us here on staff, thanks for letting us get away like this! We will come home better leaders than when we left. I’m already feeling refreshed and it’s not even halfway over. The theme of this year’s conference is leading in the power of the Holy Spirit. The Lord is sure to use these conference messages in a special way.
I want to encourage those of you who can to consider attending the ACBA Annual Meeting this November 7th at FBC Clyde. Our West Campus Pastor, Vernon Ferguson, will be receiving the Pastor of the Year Award. We also have one of our members, Shirley Stewart, getting the Lay Person of the Year Award.
The keynote speaker for the meeting will be Truman Turk, retired Director of Missions and also and long time member of Broadview! If there were ever a night to celebrate what God has been doing in our city through Broadview, this is it. The evening session in which all of these things will take place starts at 6:30.
I don’t think anybody is more deserving of this pastor of the year award than is Pastor Vernon. For those of you who haven’t heard my testimony, if it wasn’t for how the Lord used Pastor Vernon in my life, I wouldn’t be who I am today. I certainly wouldn’t be at Broadview. My relationship with Broadview began with an email to Pastor Vernon while browsing Broadview’s website from my Las Brisas apartment. (I’ve got a screen shot below)
Pastor Vernon took me under his wing. He eventually let me move into his home. He treated me like part of his family. He became a spiritual father to me and a very close friend. I believe his life is a walking demonstration Galatians 5:6, his life verse. “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.”
Faith working through love, an apt description of Pastor Vernon’s life and ministry. I know he’s probably going to kill me for writing this email. The good thing is, there’s nothing he can do to stop me. No pastor worth his salt does his ministry to be “seen” by others. God’s opinion is the only one that “truly matters” at the end of the day.
That said, I’m glad some “earthly attention” will be given to the great things God is doing at Broadview West through the leadership of Pastor Vernon. The growth experienced at Broadview West this year is especially noteworthy. If you can’t make it to the meeting but would like to send Pastor Vernon some love you can reach him here. You could also just swing by Broadview West some Sunday at 11:00 and check it out for yourself!
I hope you all have a great rest of your week and, as usual, if there’s something you’d like for me to know about just reply to this email and let me know!
