New Years Update

Hey CHurch Family,

It’s been a full month since I sent my last update. Feels like a few weeks! Time really does fly by these days. Tomorrow, Audra and I are leaving for Las Vegas, Nevada to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. To say I’m excited is an understatement.

I want to say “thank you” for being a church that allows me some time away to celebrate these milestones. I really am so grateful to be your pastor.

We are officially into a “New Year” and we have exciting things coming down the road.

Remember, our Wednesday night ministry programming was set to kick back off this Wednesday at 6:30.

Unfortunately, due to an outbreak of illness among our ministry volunteers, all Wednesday night programming has been postponed until NEXT WEDNESDAY, January 26th.

For today’s update, I want to put a few upcoming events on your radar as well as some discipleship resources to help you experience God in 2022.

Grow Your Faith

Free Discipleship Resources

Each New Year brings with it new excitement around the idea of getting physically and spiritually healthy. Do you have any new goals or plans for moving the ball forward?

A few weeks ago we talked about the “proofs” of discipleship in our Sunday morning gathering. They flow from the “my disciple” statements of Jesus in Luke and John (Luke 14:25-33; John 8:32; 13:35; 15:8)

Disciples of Jesus…

  1. Walk By Faith (Luke 14:25-33)
  2. Abide in the Word (John 8:31)
  3. Love One Another (John 13:35)
  4. Bear Much Fruit (John 15:8)

To help you grow in these areas, Broadview has invested in technological tools like Right Now Media and the Dwell App.

Dwell is a Bible study app that helps you abide in the Word. Scripture is read aloud by professional vocalists alongside of instrumental music that really brings the Word to life.

Right Now Media is like the Netflix of Christian discipleship. There are over 17,000 video Bible studies on every topic you can imagine. Bible book studies, apologetics, systematic theology, leadership development and a whole catalog devoted to kids are all available for streaming on demand. There is a TV app as well if you want to put it on the “big screen” at home.

Both of these discipleship resources are made available to members of our church without any cost to them. The church pays for a monthly subscription so that every member can benefit.

If you haven’t yet done so, please consider signing up for an account and downloading the apps.

In-House Resources

Also, don’t forget that we created our own Discipleship Toolbox not too long ago that is always available to anybody who wants it. We’ve also created a Spiritual Health Assessment if you’d like to get a baseline for where you’re at right now and how you can grow spiritually in 2022.

Develop A Plan

In addition to engaging God individually through his Word, it’s also important to start 2022 with a mindset towards spiritual growth “in community.” We have small groups that meet every Sunday and throughout the week. We also have some new “larger groups” that are starting very soon.

Here are some upcoming groups to put on your radar.

New Ladies Bible Study

Hosea | Jennifer Rothschild

Wednesdays | 10AM & 6:30PM

Starts January 19th

We have a new ladies Bible study kicking off next Wednesday. There are two meeting times to choose from: 10AM or 6:30PM.

The book of Hosea is a love story between him and his wandering wife Gomer. Through their story, God reveals a greater story of His love for His wayward people Israel. Ultimately, though, it is the story of God’s unfailing love for you and me.

Like Israel and Gomer, we are prone to wander from God’s love. But, God loves us too much to let us go. He goes to extraordinary lengths to bring us back to Him. If you’d like to grow in your knowledge and experience of God’s love then you should sign up for this group.

If you are interested in signing up you can just show up on Wednesday or register here.

In addition to the ladies Bible study we also have a new Wednesday night Bible study in the book of James kicking off Wednesday February 23rd. This will be a coed class for adults of any age. There will be an expositional Bible teaching out of the book of James followed by group discussion and life application.

The James Bible study will be led by Joshua Wisham

Fit To Serve

Tuesdays/Thursdays at 9AM

Starts February 1

In addition to growing spiritually, many other people use the New Year to set some physical fitness goals. So this year we’re trying out something new. We’re going to offer a small group physical fitness environment for anybody looking for support and accountability to reach those fitness goals.

The Christian faith is an “embodied faith” and worshipping the Lord with your body is a biblical concept. (1 Corinthians 6:20) Gathering together for the sake of improving your physical health is a God-honoring use of community. That’s why we’re starting a new group environment called “Fit to Serve.”

Jennifer Hogan has agreed to lead the group and plans to start the first one on February 1st. The groups will meet at 9AM every Tuesday and Thursday for a 6 week period. The gathering will consist of metabolic strength training and nutrition coaching from a Christian perspective.

Jennifer Hogan is a certified personal trainer and nutrition coach through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. She and David were previously members of Broadview and have remained part of our “extended family” ever since moving to Lawn.

For now, it’s a “women’s only” gathering. It will be a coach-led fitness class using your body weight and dumbbells. It is beginner friendly and a great way to familiarize yourself with healthy nutrition and creating healthy habits that will follow you the rest of your life.

Hands & Feet Ministry

April 7-9

In addition to these new groups that are coming up, we also have a few “time-sensitive” announcements I need to put on your radar. The biggest is our spring “hands and feet ministry.”

Last fall we started an experiment called the “Hands & Feet Ministry.” This was a ministry to help people in single-dwelling homes who had things that needed to be done but could not do them themselves or afford to have them done.

At first, we limited submissions to members of our church. This year, we’re doing the project again and expanding it’s reach. This year, submissions will not only be open to members of Broadview but also people outside of our church with whom you have a personal relationship.

If a ministry like this would make a positive impact on their life and communicate the love and compassion of Jesus please consider letting them know.

If you HAVE a project we need you to fill out a submission form as soon as you can.

If you are willing to WORK on these projects we need you to register as well so we can be better organized on who is working when and how to create our teams.

Finally, if you are willing to GIVE to this ministry, any amount will help to make a big impact. Last year, some of the projects exceeded $1,000 but those were also the projects that made the biggest impact. Through your generosity we will be able to bless our city in a significant way.

You can do all three of those things here.

If you have any question please contact Robert Williamson at ‭(325) 268-7553‬

D-Now Weekend

February 11-13

Registration Deadline: January 26th

This year our student ministry will be participating in the city-wide discipleship weekend February 11-13. The theme of this year’s D-Now is “Encounter: Meeting the True Jesus.” These days everybody has an “opinion” about who Jesus is. But what does Jesus actually say about himself?

This will be an important weekend in the life of our student ministry and a great opportunity for your 6th-12th grader to start/grow in their relationship with Christ. The D-DNow will start Friday at 6PM. We will have a meal at Broadview and then head to Southside.

Parents can fill out this registration form along with $30 registration fee if they want their student to participate.

For a schedule of the weekend along with more information go here.

We also need host homes!

If you’re willing to offer up your home Friday & Saturday night please reply to this email.

For now, please RSVP the date on your calendar!

Member Meeting

February 20th | 5PM

Updates | Worship & Prayer

In addition to the events above we also have a “members meeting” coming up February 20th at 5PM. This will be our first “members meeting” since I’ve been pastor of Broadview Baptist Church.

We’ve had many “business meetings” at the end of a worship gathering or annual missions night. However, this is something different. These member meetings are an opportunity for you to get some important updates on what’s going on in the life of our church.

We will present new members who have recently joined the church as well as spend time praying for the needs in our congregation (spiritual and otherwise.) While the purpose of these meetings is not “business” in nature, they are an opportunity for you to participate in the life of the church at a much deeper level.

These meetings are also an effort to try and improve our communication so that you can stay as informed and engaged as you’d like to be. We will have financial updates as well as updates on our engagement metrics like worship attendance, group engagement and serve teams. Reports on mission trips and outreach initiatives will also be included.

Most importantly, we will worship the Lord and pray. This gathering is for the “core” of the church. Only members of Broadview are invited to attend. Together, we express our dependancy on God and cry out for a continued outpouring of his Holy Spirit in our church.

Please mark the following dates and plan to be there if you’re in town and available.

2022 Member Meetings | Sundays at 5:00PM

  • February 20
  • May 1

Closing Thoughts

That’s it for this week’s update. There are actually many more dates to share but one email can only handle so much. Please put these dates and new groups on your radar so you don’t miss out. Also please consider inviting a friend to a Sunday gathering or small group. People are craving connection out there and the Church offers a community unlike any other.

When I started this update our Wednesday programming was set to kick off tomorrow and I knew of two people with COVID-19. As of the end of this update I now know 8 people with COVID-19 and our Wednesday programming has been postponed until next week.

Without question, there is a spike in cases right now in the Abilene area.

Please be smart and take precautions when you’re out. I understand that everybody is “tired of the virus” and the preventative measures to slow the spread have become politicized. But that fact doesn’t need to cloud good judgment.

As Paul said to the church in Ephesus, “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.”

On that front, if you missed last week’s message you can find it below. It was on discovering the will of God for your life in 2022 (or anytime.) The Lord really encouraged my own heart in the writing of that message and I hope it blesses you too.

Our staff had an awesome time in Livingston last week and I want to say thanks to everybody who prayed for us. We have a clear strategy for 2022 and were refreshed in the Lord for the mountains we’re about to climb.

If there’s anyway I can pray for you please let me know. I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week. And, until I see you again…

You are Sent!

Pastor Wes

Clarke’s are Going to Krakow!

Hey Church Family

It’s officially December. It’s one of my favorite months of the year. It’s not only because of the celebration of Advent and Christmas. It’s because December is the month we celebrate and recommit ourselves to being a church that is “on mission.”

We want to be an Acts 1:8 Church that serves as a witness for the Lord Jesus Christ in our own “Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria and ‘ends the earth.’” For those first century followers of Jesus, this commitment required them to pray continuously, give sacrificially and go courageously to the places God would send them. The same is true for us today.

We Are Acts 1:8

For the past year we’ve been studying the book of the Revelation. It presents a beautiful and compelling picture of people from every tribe, tongue and nation worshipping around the throne. (Rev 7:9-10)

This picture is what fuels our missionary heart as a congregation. The task of reaching the world remains unfinished and God’s chosen vehicle for accomplishing the Great Commission is local churches like ours.

Parachurch organizations are great and we partner with many of them (as you’ll see from our 2022 budget.) But, in the end, it’s people like you and churches like ours that finish the task.

So, in this week’s update, I want to challenge you to partner with us in reaching the nations through our 2022 World Missions Offering. (PDF version)

New Partnerships

As in previous years, we are firmly committed to our International Mission Board through the Southern Baptist Convention. In addition to supporting the IMB through the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, we are also getting the privilege of sending IMB missionaries through our own local church!

At some point in 2022 we will also have the privilege of commissioning the Clarke family to Krakow, Poland. They will be working with a missionary team reaching unreached college students through a university setting. They are perfectly suited for this role and it’s been amazing to watch the Lord work in them and in us to arrive at this point.

Your giving to the World Missions offering is what makes things like this possible. (Watch a video of the Clarke’s updating us on their journey below)

Tanner and Kendra Clarke give a video update about their journey into full time missionary service with the IMB.

We are also increasing our commitment to church planting here in the US. We have renewed our partnerships with Living Stone Church (Broomsfield, CO) and Redemption City Church (Fort Worth, TX). We plan on having trips to both locations at some point this summer.

This year, we’re also adding a new church plant out of Houston’s fifth ward named Cross Community Church. Our Family Mission trip is dedicated to helping this church reach their community. Our dates are schedules for July 25-29, 2022. Be praying for them and their pastor Del Traffanstedt.

Internationally, we are still committed to making disciples through our partnerships in West Bengal, West Africa, Lesotho, Romania, and Brazil. While we are not able to physically go to all of these places, we are able to make an impact through our partnerships on the ground and the generous gifts that fund those efforts.

How You Can Participate

I know we all only have a limited amount of money. Jesus taught that all of our money only has a limited amount of time. Our possession of “earthly mammon” is temporary. It’s a stewardship and we’re accountable for how we invest.

Let’s partner together and invest our worldly wealth to “make friends for ourselves in eternal dwellings.” (Luke 16:9)

Jesus is worthy of our very best. Why not give your best gift to Jesus this Christmas by donating to our World Missions Offering? Pray about what God would have you to give. Then, joyfully invest that amount for the advancing of the Gospel to the ends of the earth.

Join me and my family in making a sacrificial one-time-cash-gift for the month of December. Then, consider a smaller monthly investment that will grow that December gift for the rest of the year. If all of us give something, imagine the impact we could make!

Please prayerfully consider how the Lord wants you to participate.

And may God be glorified through our sacred effort!

Families in Need Tree

Deadline: December 19th

In addition to our World Missions Offering this December we’re also highlighting a local missions opportunity to bless families in need through our Families in Need Tree. There are ornaments placed on the tree in our Gathering Place that have items written down on them.

If you are able, please take one (or more) of the ornaments and go shop for the gift along with your other Christmas shopping. After you purchase the item you’ll need to wrap it and then bring it back to put under the Christmas tree.

All gifts must be purchased, wrapped and returned under the tree by December 19th.

The families and needs represented on this tree come from two of our area schools, our West Campus and Main Campus populations.

This is a great way to mobilize your whole family around the idea that Christmas is more about giving than it is receiving.

Joy To The World Celebration

December 11th

Food & Fellowship: 2:30-4:30

Caroling & Christmas Lights: 5:30-7:30

This weekend we’re hosting our Joy Ministry Christmas Gathering: “Joy to the World.” You’ll want to bring a gift for the gift exchange ranging from $5-10 in value. There will be plenty of finger foods, games, Christmas music and fun.

After the gathering everyone is invited to go Christmas caroling and looking at Christmas lights. They will sing carols to some of our shut-ins and ride will be available for anybody who doesn’t want to drive at night.

Dwell Bible App

& Advent Devotional

It’s not too late to join us in our Advent devotional & Bible reading plan. We kicked off Advent two Sunday’s ago but there are still several weeks left to go. You can purchase your own hardcopy of the devotional or read a PDF version for free.

Our Advent devotional was produced by a Dallas based Bible app company called Dwell. It’s an app that enables you to hear the Word of God read to you by professional vocalists and musical artists. It’s really something you have to experience for yourself to see the value of the tool.

Typically, the app costs users $40 a year for all of the features. However, we believe so strongly in the transformational impact of engaging God through His Word that we’re making it available to the people in our church for free.

You just need to sign up through our group page.

Making Abilene a Sanctuary City For the Unborn

The last thing I wanted to mention in this week’s update is a campaign going on in the City of Abilene called “Project Destiny.” You can read about the movement and what they aim to accomplish on their website. We are joining other Abilene churches in collecting signatures so that this ordinance can be put on the ballot in our next election.

Essentially, this ordinance makes abortion illegal in the city of Abilene at every stage of pregnancy (except for life saving measures to project the life of the mother.) You can read the full text of the ordinance here. (I would encourage you to do so before signing the petition)

Abortion is in the news right now with the Supreme Court hearing a Mississippi case that has the potential to roll back Roe v Wade. I know that the topic of abortion has become one of the most politically divisive issues of our day but the moral question is pretty clear according to Scripture.

Abortion prematurely and unjustly ends human life. All human lives are precious because every human being is created in the image of God (regardless of their stage of development.) This ordinance rightly acknowledges that truth and enforces our “state laws” on abortion through the creation of a private enforcement mechanism (lawsuits on those who perform or aid in performing abortions.)

Why Do We Need This Ordinance?

When I first heard about this ordinance, I wondered why we even needed it. There are no abortion facilities in the city of Abilene and Texas just passed a heartbeat bill that essentially makes the future likelihood of an abortion facility in Abilene very low.

Texas also already has very stringent laws protecting unborn life and should Roe v Wade be overturned those laws would immediately be enforced (Texas is not alone in writing these “trigger laws” for the eventuality that Roe is overturned.)

In addition to that, this ordinance will invite lawsuits on our city which will cost taxpayers money. It will ignite a polarizing political discussion and may even create division between people in the church.

Given that there aren’t any legal abortions taking place now, are these costs really worth the value added?

Having wrestled with questions like these, my answer is yes.

While sympathetic to pro-life advocates who disagree with this ordinance, I believe it’s passing would act as a preventative measure to ensure that Abilene remains a sanctuary city for unborn human life. It also makes it much more difficult for people who are performing abortions (illegally) in our city right now.

When Roe v Wade is overturned (which we may see very soon), the laws policing that act will fall to the States. Having an ordinance like this prepares us for that day.

But I Have More Questions…

Undoubtedly, there are many more questions that people may have. I would just encourage you to familiarize yourself with the ordinance. If you think you can get behind it, sign your name to the petition (located in the Gathering Place on countertop). We will collect them for the rest of this month. They need 7,000 signatures in total for the city to place the ordinance on the ballot.

The Project Destiny website has an F.A.Q. that may answer other questions. You can reply to this email if you have questions directly for me or want more information.

I want to be clear that you can be “pro-life” and be against this ordinance. I have friends who disagree with the wisdom, language and timing of this ordinance. I understand where they’re coming from and do not question their sincerity. Please remember that fact as the “politics” of this ordinance continue to unfold in our city.

Christians should not only be known for their “stance” on any given issue. We should be known for our “love.” Always remember, this issue affects PEOPLE: unborn children AND grown adults. For many, abortion isn’t a theoretical political discussion. It’s a past decision that brought confusion, pain and regret.

Whatever your “stance” let us “speak the truth in love” and honor the Spirit of Christ.

Concluding Thoughts

Before closing out this week’s email, I need to update you on one more thing.

We were scheduled to host our disaster relief training this coming Saturday but due to lack of registrations we are going to postpone the training until a later date. The basic training can be done online and I would encourage you to go ahead and do that when you get the chance. The mud out training must be done in person and will be scheduled for a later date next year.

Our next update will have some additional updates about our World Missions Offering as well as information about our 2022 General Fund budget. As you can see from the financial update below, the Lord has provided above and beyond our needs for 2021 and we are finishing the year with a surplus. It’s a different set of circumstances than what we were looking at last year at this same time.

I’m so thankful for the good work that the Lord continues to do in and through our church family. 2021 was different in so many ways but God’s faithfulness has remained steady throughout every season.

If there’s anyway I can pray for you please let me know by replying to this email. I hope you have a great rest of your week!

Celebrating Advent

Hey Church Family

I hope you had a great weekend! This week we say goodbye to November and hello to December. In today’s update, I want to fill you in on a few things that are happening RIGHT NOW and then some additional announcements that are coming up in the next few weeks.

Advent at Broadview – Starts today!
Women’s Ministry Brunch – December 4th
J.O.Y. Ministry Gathering – December 11th
Disaster Relief Training – December 11th

Celebrating Advent

Let’s start with our Advent celebration this year at Broadview. We kicked off Advent in each of our morning worship services today. We lit the “hope” candle and started a new sermon series on “The Mystery of God” that will take us all the way up to Christmas.

I’m excited to see what God is going to do in this season. Something new we’re doing this year is a church-wide Bible reading plan and Advent devotional. We did a church-wide Bible reading plan for our “Off The Grid” spiritual growth campaign and it was well received. This will continue that effort but in a different way.

If you’re interested in watching a video on how you can participate you can watch it below. Otherwise, keep reading and I’ll give you all the details.

Lead Pastor Wes Terry explains how to participate in the 2021 Advent Devotional and Bible reading plan through the Dwell app and Broadview group account.

A New Discipleship Tool

There’s a Bible reading app that I’ve been using for several years now and when I saw that they were going to have an Advent devotional to go along with an Advent themed Bible reading plan I knew it was time to share the love and spread the Word about this great discipleship tool.

The name of the Bible app is “Dwell.” When I say it’s a Bible reading app I mean it literally reads the Bible to you. And I’m not talking about those boring, computerized, robot-sounding voices. I’m talking about “butter-in-your-ears listen-to-them-read-the-phone-book” kind of voices.

My personal favorite is David. He’s a British narrator who’s described as “warm and sophisticated.” Other folks on staff like Felix. He’s an East African narrator who’s described as “energetic and warm.” That’s just two of 15 voices, each with their unique style and personality. (They’re even gettting kid voices so they can engage with Scripture through listening as well.)

I’m sure you’ll find the perfect voice that fits your unique personality and benefit greatly from engaging God in his Word through listening and meditation.

You might think that listening to the Bible isn’t as good as reading it. Maybe it feels like cheating or “taking the easy way out.” If that’s the case, please know they have a reading feature alongside of the listening feature. But even if they didn’t, listening to Scripture in no way undermines the impact God’s Word can have on your heart.

For centuries, people’s only engagement with the Word of God came through listening and oral traditions. This tool recaptures that method and leverages modern day technology combined with beautiful artwork to really bring the Bible to life. The message never changes, but our tools and technological mediums do. This is a new tool for a new day.

Get Started Today!

Because Dwell’s Advent devotional is so good; and because Dwell is such a valuable discipleship tool, we signed up for a church account so that everybody in our congregation can benefit. Usually, to get all the features in the app, it costs about $40 a year. If you sign up through our church account, then you’ll get all of the features for free! You’ll also get to participate in future Bible reading plans as we pursue God together in His Word.

So if you haven’t already done so, please download the app and sign up using our group page! The advent devotional starts today so don’t delay!

Women’s Ministry Brunch

December 4th | 10-12

Education Building

Also going down this week is our women’s ministry Christmas Brunch. This is something our women’s ministry has been putting on for several years now.

This is a great way to get to know other ladies at Broadview and have some fun while you’re at it.

There will be breakfast food served at 10AM and time for fun and games throughout the gathering. There will be a testimony given and also an ornament exchange (so bring one to give away as well!)

As a way of giving back please also bring a non-perishable canned food item as well.

If you have any questions you can reply to this email or contact Tamara or Terryfor more information.

Joy To The World Celebration

December 11th

Food & Fellowship: 2:30-4:30

Caroling & Christmas Lights: 5:30-7:30

The week after the Women’s Ministry Christmas brunch comes the J.O.Y. Ministry’s Christmas Gathering. This years gathering is entitled “Joy to the World.”

They will host food, fun and fellowship in our Education Building from 2:30-4:30. You’ll want to bring a gift for the gift exchange ranging from $5-10 in value. There will be plenty of finger foods, games, Christmas music and fun. Please put the date on your calendar and make plans to be there.

After the party there will be an “after-party” for Christmas caroling and looking at Christmas lights. Ken will fire up the people mover (for anybody who doesn’t like driving at dark) and there will be stops to visit some of our homebound members or shut ins.

Not only will you get to see some Christmas lights throughout the city of Abilene; you’ll also be able to minister to others by singing about the TRUE light of the world, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Disaster Relief Training

December 11th

Lastly, don’t forget about our Disaster Relief Training the morning of December 11th. It will make for a full day but it’s a wonderful opportunity to get credentialed to serve in the case of a disaster.

Part of being an Acts 1:8 Church is being there for people when disaster strikes. People are often most receptive to the Gospel when their world has been turned upside down.

As I mentioned in my previous updates, you can do the entire training online at your own leisure if you want.

Watch the training here.

If you’d prefer to be trained alongside others then we will have a group training in the morning (10:00-11:30am) followed by a “mud out” training after lunch (1:00-2:30pm)

This does not cost you anything but your time and effort. Disasters don’t strike every day. But, when they do, being able to help makes a tremendous difference.

Being qualified to serve doesn’t obligate you to go. It just gives you all of the tools and credentials so that you “can go” when God chooses to send you.

Closing Thoughts

That’s it for this week’s update. Remember if there’s something you need communicated “church-wide” you can alway reply to this email with a description of the event and any other information that needs to be communicated.

For those of you who helped with the Thanksgiving Meal or Blessing Bags mentioned in last week’s update, thank you so much for everything. Last Sunday was a really special night and we had a great turn out. I’m also excited to see how the Blessing Bags will minister to our homeless population in Abilene.

With December coming in just a few days, it’s time to start highlighting our World Missions Offering and involvement in International Missions. For the past two weeks in a row we’ve had missionary partners visit our church and give updates on what’s going on throughout the rest of the world.

Our next update will have specific information on some of those updates as well as other ways we can partner together to be an Acts 1:8 Church.

Don’t forget, if you need a physical copy of the Advent book we still have plenty available in the church office.

If there’s anyway I can pray for you please let me know by replying to this email. I hope you have a great rest of your week!

November Already?

Hey Church Family,

I hope you had a great weekend! It was a wonderful day today in worship and I wanted to write to remind you of several important things happening in the next few days. This is the last day of October and come November things really start moving around both campuses.

If you just want the highlights you can find them here.

If you’d rather watch a video instead of read the email you can watch below.

Pastor Wes gives an update about upcoming events at Broadview.

Church Wide Prayer Meeting

November 1st | 6:00PM

This coming Monday we will have a “church-wide” prayer meeting. Please make plans to attend so we can partner together in praying for various needs in our church family.

There are several folks in our church who are going through a seriously tough time. Our world is so broken and that brokenness has “hit close to home” these past few months in our church family.

Several of our members have lost their lives to COVID-19 and related diseases. Many others have gotten seriously sick. Families are struggling with all sorts of complications and spiritual attacks. Our congregation is facing spiritual challenges that must be addressed and overcome.

For The Mission

There are also some exciting opportunities that need our prayers. Tanner Clarke and his family will be going to “The Farm” (International Learning Center of the International Mission Board) in Richmond Virginia this next week.

We will have a special time of prayer for them during Monday’s prayer meeting so please come for that. Even if you cannot make it on Monday please pray for the following this next week as they take the “next step” in their process with the IMB.

  • Pray for clarity and direction as they explore what God’s will is for their family.
  • Pray that they would have excitement for this next step and that fear or anxiety wouldn’t creep in.
  • Pray for their hearts will be willing and open to listen to God’s direction and be obedient.
  • Pray for group and individual interviews with leadership.

This step in the process of becoming a missionary with the IMB is a really big deal. They’ve been diligently working this past year in preparation for this week. The outcome of this step will have a big shaping influence on their future in ministry. So please be praying each and every day this next week for the Clarke Family.

Brazil Mission Trip

In addition to prayers for the Clarke’s we will also be praying for our Brazil Mission Trip and the people going on that trip. The Brazil team will leave November 10th and be gone until the 19th. We will pray for God’s Spirit to move in power while they engage in evangelism and discipleship.

Finally we will pray for what God is doing in the life of our congregation. We will give thanks to God for the spiritual fruit that is growing from this Spiritual Growth Campaign. We will also pray that God continue to use this season to bring about revival in our hearts and in our church.

There is power in prayer! But we will not experience that power if we do not pray. I know it can be a hassle to take time out of your day to come up and pray at the church but this is an important season in the life of our church and we need God’s help to see it through. Please mark your calendar and make an attempt to be there if you’re in town and available.

Hands and Feet Ministry

A Report of Ministry Impact

Before I get to the new announcements, I wanted to give a quick update on our Hands and Feet Ministry from last weekend. God led us to take on 9 projects and all nine were vetted and organized by our J.O.Y ministry (Just Older Youth.)

Each day we began with breakfast at the church. The kitchen crew fixed a wonderful meal, made lunches for all workers and suppled iced down waters/drinks for the day.

Various projects were assigned and accomplished.

  • Flower beds were cleaned out and beautified.
  • Trees were trimmed back and dead bushes were removed at numerous locations.
  • Half-steps were built for easier access in a home complete with an installed grab bar.
  • Rotten wood was replaced and painted at the end of a porch overhang.
  • Rotten wood was replaced on the back side of a home complete with being chalked and painted.
  • Hand rails were painted and reattached properly to the home and porch.
  • A deck was repaired and painted, and vinyl flooring was laid in a home.
  • Most importantly, workers were able to bless each homeowner and pray with them before departing.

A total of 28 people helped accomplish all the work that was done (and will be completed soon). A few minor things will be completed in coming days as parts are delivered. Four individuals were called off on potential Saturday projects due to completion of every project the previous day.

For the 32 individuals willing to participate, I pray God richly bless you. This will be an ongoing ministry in the future. Not only does it bless fellow Broadview members in a time of need, it’s also an opportunity to bless others – outside of our church family – to show them the love of Christ in concrete and practical ways.

This ministry is without cost to the homeowner—provided in full by God. If you’d like to help in offsetting the costs that were incurred by this ministry please consider making a donation.

You can include “hands and feet” on the memo of a check or include it in the memo of an online gift on our website or church app. Thanks again for everybody who participated and may God richly bless you for your willingness to serve!

Closing Thoughts

Because we have so many NEW announcements I’m going to close it down with those two updates. Please remember to join us Monday for the prayer meeting and continue praying for what God is doing in the life of our church and its membership.

Below you’ll see several new announcements that have not been spoken about from the stage nor advertised in previous updates. Some of that was negligence on my part and some of these are just now recently coming to fruition.

Please consider participating in the upcoming “Hope Box Packing Event” and “Discover Broadview” lunch happening this weekend. Also please pray about the upcoming “Disaster Relief Training.” Our Thanksgiving meal is around the corner and we’re going to need all the help we can get with that as well. Sign up sheets are in the Gathering Place.

If there’s anyway I can pray for you please let me know. I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week and if there’s any way I can pray for you please let me know!

If you’re interested in attending this hunt please join the men’s channel in the Broadview app (or messages on the website.) You can also just reply to this email or confirm with Brian Massingill.

Discover Broadview

November 7th

After Third Service

This coming Sunday we will be hosting our monthly “Discover Broadview” lunch. This is an informal lunch gathering with Pastor Wes and/or some of the staff to get a “birds eye view” of the church and answers to any questions you may have.

It can be really challenging to find a church family and a place you can call “home.” That’s why we started hosting these informal lunch gatherings. It’s just a way for you to hear more about the church, her mission and vision and heart for ministry.

If you’re interested in attending you can reply to this email and RSVP.

We need you to register so that we have plenty of food. Just hit the reply button and let us know how many are coming!

We look forward to seeing you there!

Hope Box Packing Event

November 7th

After 3rd Service

Pizza Provided with RSVP!

One of the most active ministries in our church is our grief ministry.

  • We have a funeral meal team that works tirelessly, ministering to families during a time of their greatest pain.
  • We have a follow-up team that mails letters and care packages to families going through the grief process.
  • But we also have a targeted grief ministry to moms who’ve lost a child during pregnancy. It’s called “Hope Mommies.”

As their website states:
Hope Mommies™ is a 501(c)3 non-profit Christian organization whose sole purpose is to come alongside moms and families who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, and/or infant loss, bringing comfort, encouragement, companionship, and hope as they continue to walk this side of eternity without their beloved son or daughter.

Moms who’ve experienced this kind of loss are in a dark night of the soul. It’s a devastating experience that should not be gone through alone.

How You Can Help

You can participate in this ministry by attending the “Hope Box Packing Event” this next Sunday. November 7th, after the third service, we will pack some “Hope Boxes” that will one day be delivered to these grieving mommas. It’s a small and simple way to communicate the compassion of Jesus.

The materials are already purchased. The packing is really easy to do and somebody could do it themselves in a short amount of time. The reason we want you to attend is so you can PRAY over the boxes and the women who will receive them.

You can RSVP to Tracy Talley at 325-370-6209. Just call or text. You can also reply back to this email if that’s easier.

Ladies Bible Study

Wednesdays | 10AM & 6:30PM

There’s a new ladies Bible study that just kicked off last Wednesday. It’s not too late for you to get plugged in! They have two meeting times on Wednesday. Mornings at 10AM & evenings at 6:30PM. Childcare is available but please RSVP for morning childcare.

In Knowing God by Name: A Personal Encounter, author Mary Kassian focuses on 35 Hebrew names of God that describe His character, His relationships, and His purpose. As you learn the significance of each ancient word, you’ll be awestruck by the Lord’s magnificence and your heart compelled to worship and praise Him.

The Member Book includes brief daily study with fun and engaging learning activities. Saturated in Scripture and words from ancient hymns, Knowing God by Name is a rich, meaningful study for any woman desiring to know God better. Features:

  • 7 Sessions, plus introduction
  • Brief, daily homework
  • Incorporates quotes from ancient hymns
  • Print-driven, no videos required. Easy to schedule at any type location (church, home, coffee shop)

Flu Clinic @ Broadview

November 14th

All Three Services

For the past 4 years we’ve been hosting flu shot clinics at Broadview. We usually host them in November and this year’s flu shot clinic is November 14th.

You can register to get your flu shot using this webform. The shots are provided by Barnes and Williams Pharmacy (owned by church member Jordan Talley)

Jordan will also need a copy of your insurance card or Medicare card, if applicable, to process the vaccine. Please make sure the card you send has pharmacy processing information on it, such as RxBIN, RxPCN, RxGRP, and ID number.

You can email your card to the email address below or we can collect a copy of it the week before the clinic.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Jordan at 325-695-3784 or

Thanksgiving Service & Meal

November 21st
Service: 5PM | Meal: 6PM

Last year because of COVID-19 we had to cancel our traditional Thanksgiving Service & Meal. It’s always one of my favorite services of the year! We gather for worship at 5PM and share a meal together at 6PM.

This year the Thanksgiving service and meal will conclude a Spiritual Growth Campaign we are in as a church. The six-week social media fast and Bible reading plan will end that Sunday.

Please make plans to join us and RSVP the date on your calendar. We also need your help to make it a successful event!

As you see in the above graphic, the main dishes (turkey & dressing) will be provided. But we need your help with vegetable sides, sugary desserts and salads. If you’re feeling EXTRA generous you can help us offset the cost by donating a turkey or ham before the event. Financial donations also welcome!

Last Name A-I: Vegetables
Last Name J-R: Salads
Last Name S-Z: Desserts

There is a sign up sheet in the Gathering Place. You can also let us know how you plan to help by just replying to this email. Thanks for planning to be a part and for any help you’re able to give!

Women’s Ministry

Christmas Brunch

December 4th | 10AM

This coming December 4th our women’s ministry will be hosting their annual Christmas Bruch. This is a great way to get to know other ladies at Broadview and have some fun while you’re at it.

There will be breakfast food served at 10AM and time for fun and games throughout the gathering. There will be a testimony given and also an ornament exchange (so bring one to give away as well!)

If you have any questions you can reply to this email or contact Tamara or Terryfor more information.

Disaster Relief Training

December 11th

Part of being an Acts 1:8 Church is being there for people when disaster strikes. People are often most receptive to the Gospel when their world has been turned upside down. For this reason, Broadview has partnered with our state convention to be an arm of their Disaster Relief Ministry.

We’ve had this ministry for many years but the credentials for being “qualified to serve” expire every few years. (like a drivers license)

Many of our members attended a “yellow hat” training and became qualified to serve but those credentials must be renewed for us to send anybody out.

Will You Get Trained?

For that reason, we are going to host a church-wide disaster relief training and credentialing campaign. Just like you would get trained and certified to perform CPR in the case of an emergency so also should you get trained and certified to serve in Disaster Relief.

There is an “online” training that you can do at your own leisure. This is the easiest and simplest way to get cleared for service.

Watch the training here.

The other way is an “in person” training that we’re hosting on December 11th. We will have an “in person” basic training in the morning (10:00-11:30am) followed by a “mud out” training after lunch (1:00-2:30pm)

This does not cost you anything but your time and effort. I want to challenge you to prayerfully consider whether God would have you serve in this capacity. Disasters don’t strike every day. But, when they do, being able to help makes a tremendous difference.

Being qualified to serve doesn’t obligate you to go. It just gives you all of the tools and credentials so that you “can go” when God chooses to send you.

Reply to this email for more information. You can get trained today online or you can sign up for the training December 11th.

We Need Your Prayers

Hello church family,

I hope you had a great weekend! It was a wonderful day yesterday in worship and I wanted to write to remind you of several important things coming up this week.

Congregational Prayer

Today, from 6:30AM-8:30PM the sanctuary at our South Campus will be unlocked and open for congregational prayer. There will be prayer sheets with prayer points available at the entrance to the Sanctuary.

Several of you came last week (even though I failed to mention it in each of the morning worship services). It was so great seeing families pray together with other families from our church.

A Family Affair

My family and I prayed at about 4PM last Monday and it was a really special time. We read that day’s Bible passage (from the Bible reading plan) and prayed through the prayer points. Each person got a particular prayer request and it was a special time of family worship.

If you have kids, this is a great way to teach them that worship isn’t just about what we do on Sunday mornings in the church. It’s about what we do throughout the week whether we’re at church, at home or on the go. Take advantage of this opportunity to disciple those in your circle of influence and help other believers grow in their faith.

You can pray alone as well should you choose to do that. I just want to encourage you to pray. Ask the Lord to move in our church in a special way during this season.

November 1st Prayer Meeting

Also – don’t forget – we will have a special, church-wide, congregational prayer meeting at 6:00PM on November 1st (next Monday). This will be like the old fashioned prayer meetings we did earlier in the spring of this year. If you haven’t been able to make it during the day on Monday, please do what you can to make it to the November 1st prayer meeting. It will be an important time as it relates to this growth campaign .

ACBA “Rally For His Mission”

On Tuesday Broadview is hosting the ACBA “Rally for His Mission” Annual Meeting. Broadview is a Southern Baptist Church and we are affiliated at a local level with the Abilene-Callahan Baptist Association.

Each year, churches from around the Big Country gather together to hear about what God is doing through our cooperative effort. Broadview gives a set amount to the ACBA every year and that money is pooled with donations from other churches to make the work of our association possible.

If you’d like to see where that money is going and how it is being used then join us Tuesday for the Annual Meeting.

World’s Best BBQ

We will have a dinner (smoked brisket BBQ from the famous Les Campbell) at 5:00PM. A business meeting will follow at 6:00PM. Both the meal and subsequent business meeting will be located in our Educational Building. Finally, we will have a time of worship at 7:00PM. Taylor Miller will bring the music and David Sanchez will be preaching.

It should be a great evening if you’d like to make plans to join us.

“Hand & Feet Ministry”

Finally this coming Thursday, Friday and Saturday we’re having our first ever “Hands & Feet” ministry weekend. This is a three day effort to help people in our church who have a need that they cannot do themselves and cannot afford to have done.

This is a ministry stemming from our J.O.Y. Ministry but it’s available to any and all members of our church. The needs have all been submitted, inventoried and assessed for feasibility. What is needed now is volunteers.

You do not need to serve all three days if you cannot do all three days. You can choose to do one day, two days, or even just a few hours a day for each of the three. It’s totally up to you but we will gladly put you to work for whatever hours you can commit.

We Need Your Help!

As it stands, we still need several volunteers if we’re going to knock out all of the jobs we have going. If you are willing to serve or plan to be there but haven’t told anybody yet then please reply to this email and let us know.

We will start each day at 8AM for breakfast. So if you plan on helping, just meet us at the church at 8AM Thursday morning and we’ll feed you and send you to the location for the day. There will be somebody on site who is skilled enough to engineer and direct the job responsibilities. All you’ll need to do is engage in the tasks you are assigned.

Some of you have offered equipment or even professional crews for some of the jobs we have lined up. It really is amazing how God puts things together.

How You Can Help

If you’d like to serve but your not able it doesn’t mean you cannot participate. We are going to need some people who can help with the meals and even more who would be willing to help offset the cost of this ministry with a donation to cover the expenses and construction costs.

If you’d like to give to this need just write “hands and feet” as a memo on your check or in your online gift. Thanks again for being willing to jump in on this project as we seek to be the hands and feet of Jesus to members of our church in their time of need.

But What About Wednesday?!

You may be asking, “But what about Wednesday?” We do seem to have announcements for every other day of the week but that one. It’s not because we don’t have anything going on. We have our standard weekday programming for preschool, children students and adults.

However, our ladies Bible study gathering will NOT BE MEETING THIS WEEK.

This group is taking a one week break then they will be kicking off a new Bible study on October 27th.

New Ladies Bible Study

The name of this new study is  “Knowing God by Name.” (Books are $10 each)
There will be options at 10AM and 6:30PM.

Here’s a description of the Bible study:

God is too big, too magnificent for a single name. Consider this: the God whose many names include Creator, Provider, Ruler, and Redeemer wants you to know Him better.

The new Bible study starts in just over a week so please RSVP for childcare ASAP if you’re going to be attending the 10AM class. The 6:30 class will have childcare available through our mid-week programming.

Closing Thoughts

With that I’m going to close it out for this week. For those of you who are committed to the “Off The Grid” Spiritual Growth Campaign remember that you can engage with the daily readings by downloading our app and using the messaging feature (upper right hand corner.) You can read last week’s update (and the one before that) for detailed instructions about how to use the feature

Our reading plan can be downloaded here

I’ve been so encouraged by the reports of people who are engaging in the fast and reading plan. It’s not too late to join in if you haven’t already. Please continue to pray for our church during these next five weeks. I’m praying for God to use this season to wake us up to the BEST things in life and that is intimacy with God and better relationships with people.

Unfortunately, social media was ruining both of those things for many people. It doesn’t have to be that way. There’s something better available to each of us if we’ll simply carve out the time and prioritize it.

Keep reading below for other important announcements and upcoming events. If there’s anyway I can pray for you please let me know. I hope you have a great rest of your week!

Until He Comes,’

Pastor Wes

Bless The City Project

Something I’ve not mentioned in my last two updates that I should have is a church-wide “Bless the City” project to write encouraging cards for our respiratory therapists in the city of Abilene.

As you know, the uptick in COVID cases has put a strain on our hospital ICUs. Members of our medical community are working tirelessly on the front lines against this pandemic.

We obviously want to bless EVERY member of our medical community but we just happen to have inroads to the staff serving as respiratory therapists. These members of the medical community are often working in close contact with those suffering from COVID-19 or morbidities stemming from that disease.

All you have to do is write a short encouraging note and drop it off in the church office before October 18th. That’s only a little over one week away so please consider writing one today and drop it off this Sunday at church. If not this Sunday then for sure by next Sunday.

Hands and Feet Ministry

October 21-23

Before I close just a few more quick announcements. Don’t forget about our “Hands & Feet” ministry initiative. This is 3 day project to bless members of our church who have home projects that they cannot do themselves or cannot afford to have done.(It can be anything from yard work, to painting to minor plumbing or electrical work)

The home projects will first be evaluated for suitability. Upon acceptance, they will be added to a list of projects that will be completed by Broadview volunteers who will band together and knock them out.

The dates for this project are Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 21-23.

To sign up for help or to help, please call the church office (325.692.2360) and talk to Cyndy. We need as much help as we can get so please let us know as soon as you can.

Veterans Day Tribute

November 7

We are also still trying to collect pictures of members of Broadview who have served in the military. Ideally, we would like a picture of them in uniform and another that is modern day (if there is a good time spread between the date of service and the present.)

We will compile these pictures into a video and play it on Veterans Day as part of a larger tribute to our service men and women.

Do you have a picture? Can you please send it our way? You can send your digital photographs to Ken Trevathan or drop off physical copies of the picture at the church office.

You can also just reply to this email and attach the photos that way.

Women’s Ministry Fall Retreat

October 15-16

Last Sunday was the deadline to sign up for our women’s retreat. If you are still wanting to attend and you didn’t sign up yet then please reply to this email ASAP. We have a few spots still available but need to know right away so we can make sure we make enough packets.

The registration fee is $20

Retreat Theme:
🥤 Refresh! Refreshment for the Women’s Soul.”
Special Guest Speaker: Cheri Strange, Ph.D.

Mens’ Dove Hunt.

November 5th | 4:00-Sunset

Don’t forget about our men’s dove hunt the last day of dove season, November 5th from 4:00 to sundown. If you’re interested in attending this hunt please join the men’s channel in the Broadview app (or messages on the website.) You can also just reply to this email or confirm with Brian Massingill.

If the birds aren’t flying then the clay pigeons will. You need to bring your own firearm and ammunition.
