A History Of Broadview
"It all started with 12 people in 1959..."A Vision Of What Could Be
A small group of people from Temple Baptist Church (1000 Sycamore St) were getting together in cottage prayer meetings. After earnestly and steadfastly praying for several months, a vision was born to start a church in the southern part of Abilene. On April 3, 1959, that prayer group voted to become a mission. The first service was June 14, 1959. On July 26, 1959, Broadview was officially constituted into a church.
How We Got Our Name
The members of the then Temple Baptist Church chose the name “Broadview” because 2500 South 27th was a “high place” in Abilene from which you could see for miles looking Southward. They had a broad view of the future. A future that now consists multiple services, multiple campuses, reaching multiple generations both here and Abilene and all around the world.
A Legacy of Faith
From that original 29 charter members, Broadview has grown into what it is today. It was a journey of faith that was long and hard at times. They went before us and left a great legacy; a legacy of faith, obedience, submission, sacrifice and love to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We desire to continue in that way.
About Broadview
Worship. Discipleship. MissionWe Are Acts 1:8
Having been empowered by the Holy Spirit, we are committed to making disciples not only of the unreached peoples in Abilene but also the unreached peoples in our state, our nation, and our world. We don’t believe you have to sacrifice ministering to your local community in order to reach the nations. Nor do we think that the unreached peoples of India are any less important than those in our own “backyard.” We are a church that does both. We are Acts 1:8.
We Celebrate Diversity
We want unity but not uniformity, distinction but not division. We are a church made up of people with
- different personalities,
- different gifts,
- different backgrounds,
- different ethnicities,
- different cultures,
- different preferences,
- and different generational perspectives.
Yet, we stand united because we share one purpose, one mission, one Spirit, and one Lord.
Every Person Has A Place
1 Corinthians 12:12 says,
“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.”
The church is a body but the members that make up that body are different. We celebrate that diversity. Every person has a place. There are no non-essential persons at Broadview. Every person has place to belong, a part to play and a purpose for being here
Our Mission
Our Mission
Broadview Baptist Church exists to be a Great Commandment, Great Commission, Acts 1:8 Church. This mission drives everything that we do as a church.
Great Commandment
The Great Commandment is given by Jesus in Matthew 22:37-40.
Jesus says
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the Prophets.”
The first of the two commandments is a quotation of Deuteronomy 6:5.
In Luke 10:27 The Great Commandment is summarized as
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”
In Mark 12:28-34 Jesus is asked which commandment is the most important of all.
He replies
“The most important is, Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other no other commandment greater than these.”
To love God in this way means having faith in him and delighting in him above anything and anyone else.
The words heart, soul, mind, and strength indicate that such love involves the total devotion of a person’s entire being.
At Broadview, we are dedicated to growing in that kind of love and that kind of faith.
Great Commission
The Great Commission is given by Jesus in Matthew 28:18-20.
Jesus came to his disciples and said,
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behnew, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Jesus has absolute authority throughout heaven and earth. Jesus is the absolute authority for the Church. His command for the church is to “go and make disciples.”
Broadview seeks to be obedient to this command by going wherever God sends us and sharing the gospel as we go.
Upon a person’s faith commitment to Jesus as Lord, we baptize them by immersion as a public profession of their faith. As a part of our local church body, we seek to make them fully committed followers of Christ by teaching them to observe all things that Christ has commanded.
Acts 1:8
We’ve been empowered by the Holy Spirit to be a witness.
Before his ascension into heaven, Jesus tnew this to his disciples.
“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
After saying those things Jesus was lifted up into heaven.
Broadview seeks to help accomplish the Great Commission through an Acts 1:8 strategy. We seek to balance our missionary activity so that we’re making a difference in our local area as well as globally. Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria translate for us at a local, state, national, and global level respectively.
